Student
Essay Contest To Be
Highlight Of Third Annual Festival
All Antrim
County students in grades 1 through 6 are being invited
to enter the Antrim County Petoskey Stone Festival Essay
Contest being sponsored by Alden State Bank.
"This year, our
topic is "How is the Petoskey Stone important to
northern Michigan?", said Joe Meyers, Antrim County
Associate Planner and a member of the Antrim County
Petoskey Stone Festival sub-committee. "Students may
write about how the stone is important to our geology,
our history, our native American culture, or our local
northern Michigan tourism industry."
Remnants of a
coral reef in a warm water sea that once covered
Michigan during the prehistoric Devonian age some 350
million years ago, true Petoskey stones, Michigan’s
official state stone, are found only in northern
Michigan.
All essays,
which may be from 50 to 500 words in length, handwritten
or typed, will be judged according to the age of the
child being considered, said Meyers. "Each essay must
have the student’s name, age, grade and school, and
phone number on it for contact information."
Teachers
throughout Antrim County are being encouraged to make
the contest a class project, Meyers added.
Like last year’s
contest, U.S. savings bonds will be awarded to the
students with the three best essays as judged by
Michigan State Representative Kevin Elsenheimer, Antrim
Review owner and publisher John Tarrant, and Grand
Traverse Rock and Mineral Club newsletter editor Deb Ann
Bull.
"This year, our
first prize is a $200 savings bond, courtesy of Alden
State Bank," Meyers said. Second prize will be a $100
bond, with the third place winner earning a $50 bond.
Said Alden State
Bank Assistant Vice-President Liz Bartz, "Alden State
Bank is honored and proud to be a part of this contest,
which is not only educational, but offers an opportunity
to further appreciate a natural resource so unique to
northern Michigan."
Representatives
from the bank, as well as Rep. Elsenheimer and other
dignitaries, will be on hand in Eastport’s Barnes Park
at the May 24 festival to announce the winners and
present their awards, said Meyers.
All essay
entries must be submitted to the Antrim County
Coordinator/Planner’s Office, 205 E. Cayuga, Bellaire,
MI 49615 via mail by May 9th, 2008. Entries may
also be e-mailed to
